HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s Department of Public Safety now has 27 new corrections officers.
The recruits graduated Friday in a ceremony at Waikiki’s Hale Koa Hotel.
Department spokeswoman Toni Schwartz says this is the first class of recruits to receive some of the updated training that was implemented after an inmate awaiting trial on murder charges was able to escape a court loading area in February. It’s the last class to graduate for four months while officials revamp the training curriculum.
The new officers underwent eight weeks of training, much of it intensely physical.
They have been assigned to Oahu facilities and the Maui Community Correctional Center.
